Gold Prospecting in Vihiga County, Kenya β Maps & Gear
Vihiga County has the longest documented artisanal gold history in Western Kenya. Here’s where to legally prospect, what to bring, and what to expect to find.
The gold geography
The Yala and Edzava river systems carry alluvial gold from upland greenstone belts. Active artisanal sites cluster around:
- Hamisi Sub-County (Tiriki belt)
- Sabatia (Esibakala outcrops)
- Vihiga town periphery
Permits
You’ll need an Artisanal Mining Permit (AMP) from the Mining Cadastre — apply at portal.miningcadastre.go.ke. Annual fee, valid for one named site.
Detector choice for Vihiga soil
Soil composition: clay-loam with moderate iron, low laterite. Gold Master 24K works well for river-bed and bank detecting. Upgrade to Axiom Lite when you move to drier upland prospecting where targets are deeper.
Realistic finds
Most artisanal Vihiga sites yield 0.3-2 grams per detector-day across multiple targets. The largest documented find this year was 17g in a single nugget near Esibakala.
Working with locals
Vihiga’s artisanal mining community is well-organised. Always introduce yourself to the local mining co-operative — co-prospecting is legal, profitable, and culturally expected. Going solo invites unnecessary friction.
Detector setup for Vihiga
If you ordered a Gold Master 24K from us, request the “Vihiga preset” before shipping — we tune ground balance and discrimination for the local soil profile.
