Migori County Gold β The Macalder Belt & Modern Detecting
The Macalder belt stretches 40km through Migori County and produces 60% of Kenya’s documented modern artisanal gold. The geology is unforgiving on cheap detectors.
What you’re prospecting through
Macalder host rock is a mix of greenstones, banded ironstones, and quartz reefs. Surface laterite is 1-3m deep with high iron oxide content. VLF detectors signal endlessly — useless without aggressive discrimination.
The realistic detector for Migori
For reef-margin and active artisanal sites, you need Pulse Induction. The Garrett Axiom ignores the laterite signature and reads conductors only. Field tested across multiple Suna sites.
Permits and access
Migori has both small-scale mining licences (SMML) and AMPs. Most artisanal access is via co-op membership at one of the registered Migori Gold Co-ops. Solo prospecting on registered claims is illegal — always check with the local Cadastre office first.
Expected yield profile
Macalder yields vary wildly: 0.5g to 8g per detector-day. The 2025 record was a 47g specimen found near Suna East. The belt is genuinely productive — but only with proper PI gear and proper permits.
