Gold Prospecting in Zambia — The Complete Field Guide

📅 28 Apr 2026 📖 4 min read 👁 6 views
Field Engineering · Updated April 2026

By Garrett Africa Field Engineering · 8 min read · Verified against Ministry of Mines records and Solwezi cooperative reports

Zambia is best known for copper but the gold story is bigger than most prospectors realise. The same Copperbelt geology that makes Zambia the world's third-largest copper producer also hosts significant primary lode gold in the surrounding greenstone belts — particularly around Solwezi (North-Western Province). The trade-off: the heavy mineralisation that defines Zambian soil destroys most VLF gold detectors. Pulse Induction is the only realistic option.

Zambia gold overview

Three productive corridors:

  • Copperbelt (Kitwe, Mufulira, Chingola, Ndola) — gold associated with copper sulphides, depths 2–6m, requires PI
  • North-Western Province (Solwezi, Mwinilunga) — primary lode gold in greenstone, depths 1–4m, PI essential
  • Lusaka and Central Province — alluvial traces in mixed sedimentary terrain, shallower, PI recommended

Copperbelt Province ⛏️

North-Central Zambia · -12.804° S, 28.214° E · HIGH POTENTIAL

Copperbelt Province

Why it's hot: Same matrix that hosts Zambia's copper hosts associated gold. Active artisanal cooperatives operate around Mufulira and Chingola. Average target sizes are larger than Kenya — multi-gram nuggets are common in greenstone-host zones.

Best detector: Garrett Axiom in SALT mode with 13×11" DD coil. Heavy mineralisation makes VLF unworkable.

Access: Kitwe / Mufulira are the gateways. Always coordinate with Mining Cadastre for active concession boundaries — the Copperbelt is heavily licensed.

North-Western Province (Solwezi) 🏞️

Solwezi region · -12.183° S, 26.395° E · HIGH POTENTIAL

North-Western Province

Why it's hot: Greenstone belts containing primary lode gold. Less worked than the Copperbelt = more left to find. Field reports from our customers consistently show 5–15g per productive weekend with the Garrett Axiom.

Best detector: Garrett Axiom in NORMAL mode (or LARGE for known reef hot spots). 13×11" DD coil for general work, 16×14" Mono for maximum-depth runs.

Access: Solwezi town → Mwinilunga road. The artisanal cooperatives here are organised — joining one short-term as a guest is the fastest way to find productive ground.

Lusaka Region 🌍

Central Zambia · -15.387° S, 28.323° E · MEDIUM POTENTIAL

Lusaka Region

Alluvial traces in mixed sedimentary terrain at 0.5–2m depth. Less productive per hectare than NW or Copperbelt, but the shorter access from the capital makes it good for weekend work.

Permits and the Mines and Minerals Act 2015

Zambia's Mines and Minerals Development Act (2015, amended 2022) governs prospecting:

  • Artisanal Mining Right (AMR): for individuals, area <5 hectares, valid 2 years renewable. Apply at the Provincial Mining Office.
  • Prospecting Licence: commercial scale, requires environmental approval (ZEMA), valid 4 years. Application fee USD 500–2,000 depending on area.
  • Cadastre check: use the Ministry's online cadastre to confirm the area isn't already licensed before applying.

Garrett Africa Zambia (+260 974 309 875) can connect you with cooperatives in Solwezi and Mufulira that handle paperwork on behalf of new prospectors.

Recommended gear for Zambian goldfields

  • Detector: Garrett Axiom (ZMW 140,000) is non-negotiable for Copperbelt and NW. Garrett Axiom Lite (ZMW 90,000) is the budget option — same engine, fewer accessories.
  • Coils: 13×11" DD as default. Add 16×14" Mono for deep-target days.
  • Pinpointer: Garrett Pro-Pointer AT
  • Pan + sluice: for confirming finds and processing creek bed material
  • Safety: Copperbelt has active mining infrastructure — hi-viz, hard boots, water (4L+/day in dry season), permit copy

Where to sell gold in Zambia

Lusaka buyers pay around ZMW 1,800–2,000 per gram for clean gold (mid-2026). Solwezi buyers pay slightly less (ZMW 1,700–1,900) but save you the travel. Always weigh on a calibrated scale and confirm the buyer is licensed by the Bank of Zambia.

Ready for the Copperbelt?

The Axiom pays for itself in 3–6 productive weekends in Solwezi greenstone. WhatsApp our Zambia team for a quote.

FAQ

Can a beginner prospect in the Copperbelt?

Yes, but join an established cooperative first. Solo prospecting on unmapped concessions is risky — both legally and physically (active mining infrastructure, deep shafts).

Garrett Axiom or Axiom Lite for Solwezi?

Same detection capability. Lite if budget is tight (ZMW 90,000), full Axiom for the dual-coil flexibility (ZMW 140,000).

Is gold prospecting profitable in Zambia?

For organised prospectors with proper gear and licensed access, yes. Solo amateurs without permits should expect to lose money — license fees, fuel, and gear add up faster than weekend finds.
